*Note: this is a group project. Any submissions related to this project should be done by, and submitted as, a team. Everyone in your group should submit the same materials in applicable links.

This project is due Wednesday, September 25.

Your job is to create a policy around students’ use of generative AI tools in courses at University of Michigan-Flint. This should be a generalizable policy that can apply to any degree program or course - to accommodate this flexibility you may include different options or program-specific rules in your policy. The policy is intended to be in place for at least 5-10 years, so it should be sensitive not only to current generative AI tools, but capabilities that may emerge in generative AI technology over the next decade.

Your policy document is a group submission and should be no less than 4 pages. Your intended readers are students who will be expected to follow this policy, as well as professors who will be expected to enforce this policy.

It should have the following elements, which also serve as the grading rubric for this project. The below elements do not necessarily need to be in their own separate sections; you may choose to combine them or separate them as you see fit. You are welcome to include more sections or subsections as you’d like.

Expected content in your generative AI policy:
1. A clarification on what generative AI is, which existing platforms are under the purview of your policy, and what criteria the university should use to assess if future tools fall under the purview of generative AI and therefore this policy. Reference to literature is expected. (20%)

2. An acknowledgement of how generative AI tools already are - and could be - used in courses at University of Michigan-Flint. Reference to specific generative AI tools is expected, particularly those beyond just ChatGPT. (20%)

3. Recognition of the limitations and flaws of generative AI, which can help students understand the risks of using generative AI and help professors understand the positive and negative implications of generative AI-use on their students’ coursework. These risks and flaws should be discussed specific to the education context. (20%)

4. The generative AI policy, which may describe any number of the following: acceptable uses of generative AI, encouraged uses of generative AI, banned uses of generative AI, procedures around disclosing use of generative AI, procedures to be used by professors when generative AI-use is suspected or identified, etc. The policy should be specific enough that I (Dr. Z) could implement it in my own courses (this ethics course or any other I may teach), and that your fellow students would be able to follow without accidentally violating the policy due to a misunderstanding. The policy should also be future proof, meaning that it would be relevant and sensitive to generative AI capabilities over the next 5-10 years. (40%)

A note: It is acknowledged that generative AI tools could be used to do this assignment (it is a text based assignment after all). As stated in the syllabus, our current policy on generative AI does not outlaw its use for this or any other assignment. So while you are allowed to use generative AI to produce your policy (very meta, I know), keep in mind that I am expecting to implement your policy in this class so you would want to make sure what you're submitting is a policy you would want to and be able to follow personally. Also keep in mind that some of the instructions for this assignment may produce fake/inaccurate content given known flaws with how generative AI works. You are responsible for any portion of this project that is produced or edited by generative AI tools, and are you expected to disclose use of generative AI tools in your project submission.
